Insa in “Dusmanii societatii”, Johnson isi propune sa realizeze, din perspectiva conservatoare, o radiografie a principalelor maladii contemporane, de la decadenta universitatilor pana la terorismul politic si intelectual, trecand prin criza artelor plastice, a muzicii sau a filozofiei. Daca ar fi sa execut intr-o fraza cartea, as spune ca reprezinta mai mult un simptom a ceea ce vrea sa descrie decat o explicatie consistenta. Si asta pentru ca Johnson intra in foarte multe subiecte mai mult sau mai putin tehnice, fara a avea o teorie integratoare acceptabila, simuland in acelasi timp competenta unui expert autentic, cu rezultate dezamagitoare. Pentru a lua doar un exemplu flagrant, atunci cand discuta despre “miracolul” economic postbelic, scriitorul britanic se transforma intr-un hagiograf al lui J.M. Keynes, ceea ce nu ar fi neaparat un lucru rau, cata vreme nu l-ar transforma pe acesta intr-un teoretician de frunte al capitalismului, ar pune prosperitatea occidentala pe seama “Teoriei generale” si ar debita ineptii de tipul “teoria lui Keynes a devenit noua credinta capitalista”, nonsensuri ca “triumful real al lui Kenes a fost faptul ca a convins guvernul britanic sa foloseasca macroeconomia pentru a rezolva problemele postbelice” si enormitati sonore- “daca Keynes nu poate pretinde meritul de a fi ajutat la boomul postbelic, atunci niciun un ganditor din istorie nu poate aspira la meritul de a fi influentat ceva”. Cat priveste ideea sa generala, in masura in care putem vorbi de asa ceva, Johnson considera ca Occidentul a urmat o linie ascendenta pana la inceputul anilor ’70, cand a aparut o perioada de indoiala, neincredere si pesimism generalizat referitoare tocmai la temeiurile care sustineau societatea. Aceasta chestionare radicala risca, in opinia lui, sa arunce lumea in bratele noilor barbari, vazuti de el cu precadere din afara lumii anglo-saxone. Diagnosticul pare corect, insa plasarea lui temporala in sec. XX e cel putin superficiala in mai toate domeniile, ceea ce iti lasa senzatia ca in loc sa atace inima monstrului, Johnson impunge cu o sulita boanta doar unul dintre nenumaratele sale capete. De pilda, contestarea valorilor morale absolute nu incepe si nici nu isi traieste apogeul cu A.J. Ayer si a sa “Language, Truth and Logic”, dupa cum muzica nu a trebuit sa-l astepte pe Schonberg pentru a deveni ininteligibila, in acelasi fel in care pictura nu a fost distrusa de Picasso si de galeriile goale ale lui Yves Klein, samd. In fapt, dupa cum arata mai multi autori cu o teorie istorica si antropologica mai solida, ruptura occidentala se produce undeva la sfarsitul secolului XVIII, atunci cand apare un val critic devastator (Enciclopedia&co), ce produce o devolutie, ale carei manifestari politice, spirituale si culturale le experimentam astazi. Daca ne referim doar la relativismul moral, de exemplu, el e deja bine articulat in “Supplément au voyage de Bougainville” (Diderot), in teoriile lui Rousseau privitoare la sentimentele morale sau in constructivismul legal al lui Voltaire, “Daca vrei legi bune, arde-le pe cele vechi si fa-ti singur unele noi”. Dar acelasi lucru se poate spune despre teoria politica (Reinhart Koselleck, “Critique and Crisis”), arta (Hans Sennholz, “Pierderea masurii”), muzica (Jacques Barzun, “Darwin, Marx, Wagner: Critique of a Heritage”), literatura (Irving Babbitt, “Rousseau and romanticism”) sau societate (Edmund Burke, “Reflectii asupra Revolutiei Franceze”). Johnson isi rateaza tinta cu brio, ceea ce are drept consecinta previzibila inventarierea unor falsi adversari, respectiv a unor solutii suspecte, pe liniile unui maniheism de sorginte neoconservatoare. In Deuteronomul pe care autorul britanic ni-l propune la finalul cartii, adica “Cei Zece Stalpi ai Civilizatiei noastre”, aflam ca “atunci cand cerinta libertatii intra in conflict cu urmarirea altor scopuri dezirabile ale politicii publice, in mod normal libertatea trebuie sa aiba intaietate”. In acest context, nu poti sa nu te intrebi cum se impaca aceasta valoare cu propunerea lui Hans Eysenck, la care Johnson subscrie, de a realiza consensul social prin “stiinta pavloviana si tehnici behavioriste”. Sau cu ideea (falsa teoretic si istoric) ca singura sansa a saracilor o constituie o educatie oferita de stat. Sau cu afirmatia “progresul stiintei reprezinta cea mai mare speranta a noastra de viitor si oricine neaga aceasta afirmatie este un dusman al societatii” (!!!). In suma, departe de a fi vreo revelatie conservatoare sau liberala, “Dusmanii societatii” e un exemplu straniu de contopire a unui neoconservatorism politic, cu un scienticism la fel de agresiv si verdicte istorice rasuflate. |




Nu aveam o parere foarte proasta despre Paul Johnson, pana sa-i citesc ultima carte, “Dusmanii societatii”, aparuta anul acesta in limba romana. Ba chiar as putea spune ca mi-au placut foarte mult “Modern Times”, unde se gaseste, printre alte multe lucruri folositoare, cea mai pertinenta explicatie, intr-o lucrare de istorie, a crizei din ’29 sau “A History of Art”, o opera ambitioasa in care sunt depasite cliseele progresiviste si ezitarile in fata mazgalitorilor moderni si a exegezelor sforaitoare .
