In esenta, drapelul trebuie sa surprinda identitatea unei comunitati. Pe cale de consecinta, cu cat mai mare este comunitatea, cu atat mai abstracta si mai simplificata va fi reprezentarea imagistica. Si invers...De pilda, comunitatea dintr-o zona geografica bine determinata, destul de restransa teritorial, sa spunem Reggio Calabria (Italia), poate avea un steag relativ complex, care va surprinde simbolurile specifice ale oamenilor si istoriei regionale. Drept urmare, oamenii se vor recunoaste in insemnele si culorile afisate. Spre comparatie, steagul unei entitati abstracte si relativ intinsa geografic, sa spunem Uniunea Europeana, sufera din cauza unui monotonii nonfigurative. O culoare unica domina fundalul pe care sunt dispuse circular mai multe stele, in cazul de fata. In aceste conditii, nimeni nu simte vreo emotie sau tresarire pentru ca nimeni nu este reprezentat. Contele Richard Nikolaus von Coudenhove-Kalergi a propus, la un moment dat, ca steagul continental sa fie compus dintr-o cruce intr-un cerc portocaliu, pe un fundal albastru, insa Turcia s-a opus din cauza trimiterilor crestine evidente. Dorinta de unificare politica a sters diferentele, istoria, personalitatea si identitatea comunitatilor si natiunilor. In locul lor, troneaza impersonal astrele ce-i trimit cu gandul doar pe cei informati la Statele Unite ale Europei, o struto-camila utila doar cartelului format din politicieni si bancheri. Dar cazul UE nu este singular. Ganditi-va, de pilda, la drapelurile complet rosii ale comunistilor sau la cele negre ale anarhistilor. Apoi, puneti-le alaturi de vechile steaguri monarhice sau, pentru un rezultat si mai dramatic, de cele ale diverselor provincii istorice...Diferenta de culoare, reprezentare si imagine va fi coplesitoare. Iar aceasta diferenta contine doar o mica parte din ceea ce s-a pierdut la nivel antropologic si cultural, in drumul spre integrare europeana. Totusi, nici stindardele actuale ale tarilor europene nu au o istorie foarte stralucitoare. Majoritatea a capatat viata in secolul 19, ca rezultat al diverselor revolutii nationale ce au unit regiuni si populatii altfel foarte diverse si aproape de neunit ( vezi cazul flamanzilor si valonilor, de pilda, desi fiecare tara, inclusiv Romania, poate fi un obiect de studiu pentru aceasta perspectiva totalitarist-unificatoare). Franta constituie si in acest caz o exceptie si un model, tricolorul fiind adoptat in 1790, pentru ca ulterior sa devina o referinta pentru celelalte natiuni turbulente, inclusiv din secolul 20, daca e sa ne gandim la miscarile de eliberare africane. Singura amentintare a venit nu din partea Vechiului Regim, ci din directia revolutionarilor sociali, insa tricolorul a ramas triumfator pe tot parcursul secolului 20. James Billington in “Fire in the minds of men” scrie: “The tricolor remained the rainbow of the free even for social revolutions: a banner freed from “the barbarous escutcheons” of “nations which typify brute force with their three-headed eagles and vultures,” with colors as pure as the people themselves”.

Heraldica poate constitui o buna introducere in transformarile revolutionare ale ultimelor doua secole. Steagurile, in principal, ofera un rezumat simbolic important al proiectelor sociale, derulate din abundenta de modernitate.
