Filmului, produs in 1992, nu-i lipseste aproape nimic, paradoxal, nici macar vedetele: este regizat de Robert Redford si ii are printre protagonisti pe Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt, a carei performata le umbreste pe cele din Seven sau Fight Club. Pelicula prezinta istoria unei familii de presbiterieni din Montana, stat ai carui locuitori aveau ca singure preocupari, asa cum spune si Brad Pitt, credinta, munca si pescuitul. A descrie sau a comenta un astfel de film, in care atmosfera si imaginea sunt coplesitoare ar fi o adevarata blasfemie. Dincolo de personajul fiului risipitor, jucat de Pitt, impresioneaza cel al tatalui, pastor presbiterian. Figura acestuia mi-a adus in minte un fragment din Jurnalul Fericirii al lui Nicolae Steinhardt (multumiri lui Cristian Comanescu pentru mailul in care-mi atragea atentia asupra citatului). Desi n-avea cum sa fi vazut filmul (a decedat cu 3 ani inainte de aparitia sa), Steinhardt i-a facut acestuia, involuntar, cea mai buna cronica: "O fi hula curata, dar am o teorie a mea, dupa care Hristos nu ne apare din Evanghelii numai ca bland, bun, drept, fara de pacat, indurator, puternic s.a.m.d. Din relatarile Evangheliilor — fara exceptie — ne apare si inzestrat cu toate insusirile minunate ale unui gentleman si cavaler. Mai intai ca sta la usa si bate; e discret. Apoi ca are incredere in oameni, nu-i banuitor. Si increderea e prima calitate a boierului si cavalerului, banuiala fiind, dimpotriva, trasatura fundamentala a smecherului. Gentlemanul e cel care — pana la dirimanta proba contrara — are incredere in oricine si nici nu se grabeste, avid, sa dea crezare defaimarilor strecurate pe seama unui prieten al sau. La smecheri si la jigodii reactia numarul unu e intotdeauna banuiala, iar neasemuita satisfactie — putinta de a sti ca semenul lor e tot atat de intinat ca si ei. E mereu — si cu osebire de grijuliu asupra acestui punct — atent si politicos; prietene ii spune lui Iuda. Niciodata o insulta ori o vorba dispretuitoare fata de pacatos. Nu se vede din nici un text vreun moralism intepat, vreo pudoare de comanda. Si nici o conditie prealabila pusa pacatosilor, nici o discriminare: Pe cel ce vine la mine nu-l voi scoate afara. Fiului risipitor ii iese in cale (si inca departe fiind… ). Iar ori de cate ori da, da, din belsug, mai mult decat s-ar cuveni, boiereste. (Ce poate fi mai strain de contabila meschinarie si fariseic dramuita socoteala, si mai buna dovada de marinimie, decat aceste cuvinte de la Ioan 3, 34: „Caci Dumnezeu nu da duhul cu masura”?) Gospodareasca, nu, cuvantul e prea frumos, administrativa ingrijorare a lui Iuda pentru banii cheltuiti pe mir arata, pe de o parte, ca vanzatorul era lipsit de simtul darniciei, iar pe de alta ca Domnul de la sine trecea — boiereste — peste orice calcul si avaritie (fie ele sulemenite in opere de binefacere si patronaj) pentru a gusta bucuria de a risipi (care-i tot una cu a jertfi) in clipe de inaltare sufleteasca. Si acesta este un gest de nobil, nobilul fiind oricand in stare sa-si sacrifice viata sau sa-si spulbere averea. (Nobilul isi va da uneori viata in duel pentru motive mundane ori isi va pierde averea la carti — dar purtarile lui, ca tot ce-i pamantesc, nu-s decat stangace imitatie a virtutilor marinimoase; dragostea trupeasca nu-i oare si ea biata contrafacere a dragostei divine?) Incredere in oameni, curaj, detasare, bunavointa catre cei napastuiti de pe urma carora nu te poti alege cu nici un folos (bolnavi, straini, intemnitati), un simt sigur al maretiei, predispozitia pentru iertare, dispretul fata de prudenti si agonisitori: toate sunt trasaturi ale gentlemanului si cavalerului.” Concluzia i-o las lui Murray Rothbard, care a catalogat pelicula drept “incantatoare”: “What can I say? If this New York peckerwood can be enraptured by a movie about Montana fly-fishing, how much more in love with A River Runs Through It will be those readers who have actual experience of these rural delights! For urban and rural viewers alike, not the least of the charms of this movie is that it shows us life as it used to be lived, life in the Old Republic, of the America that we have lost, or rather that has been seized from us.” |
