Una dintre cheile prin care poate fi descifrata productia lui Robert Hamer si inteles partenerul lui Guiness, hotul Gustave Flambeau (interpretat de Peter Finch) poate fi maxima lui Chesterton: “Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it.” Flambeau, hot de opere de arta, nu fura din principii materialiste, necomercializandu-si prada. El fura, insa nu pentru bani, si plateste cu varf si-ndesat pentru asta, cu frica, asa cum singur explica. Insa cel mai interesant fragment al filmului este acela in care Father Brown, preot catolic, cu preocupari de detectiv privat, explica diferenta sa dintre el si un politist angajat al statului. Ultimul vrea sa prinda un infractor pentru a-i intemnita trupul, in timp pe preotul vrea sa-l gaseasca pentru a-i elibera sufletul. De aceea politistul apeleaza la coercitie, in timp ce preotul apeleaza la liberul arbitru al hotului. La fel, autoritatile statului asistential din ultimul secol vor sa intemniteze trupurile celor asistati in locuinte sociale, in mijloace de transport in comun, de multe ori impotriva vointei lor, nefiind preocupate in niciun fel de liberul arbitru al acestora, cu atat mai putin de sufletul lor. Acesta este unul dintre motivele pentru care deresponsabilizarea indivizilor este cel mai evident efect al politicilor publice, care in cel mai bun caz, sunt preocupate numai de bunastarea materiala a alegatorilor. Eroii cinematografiei moderne sunt fie supranaturali, fie politisti (sau alti reprezentanti ai autoritatilor), fie anti-eroi, care pot acoperi o plaja larga, de la Robin Hood la Che Guevara. Atmosfera morala din actualele firme este una gri, diferenta dintre bine si rau fiind, in cel mai bun caz, una de nuanta. Pana la mijlocul secolului insa, binele era bine, iar raul era rau, chiar si pe marele ecran. Cel mai bun exemplu este ecranizarea facuta dupa
